Often, yes. Canva for Nonprofits gives Canva Pro features to one team of up to 50 people at no cost, and churches can apply. The catch is proof: Canva has to verify that your church is a registered nonprofit, and many churches have never received the IRS letter that makes that easy.
Many of the templates I build for churches live in Canva, so I get asked about free Canva for churches a lot. Here's what I've learned, plus what to do if your application gets stuck.
What churches get with Canva for Nonprofits
According to Canva's help center, approved organizations get Canva Pro's premium features plus team tools, free for one team of up to 50 members. That includes:
- A Brand Kit with your church's logos, colors, and fonts, so every volunteer uses the same ones.
- Brand templates you can lock, so volunteers can change the words without breaking the design.
- Premium photos, graphics, and video from Canva's library.
- Transparent-background downloads, which you'll want for logos on slides and shirts.
- Shared folders and designs for your staff and volunteers.
If you need more than 50 seats, Canva offers extra seats at half off its Enterprise pricing.
Can churches qualify for Canva for Nonprofits?
Canva's eligibility guidelines ask for an organization that is officially registered as a charitable nonprofit in its country, which in the U.S. means 501(c)(3) status. It can't be part of the government or run for profit. Canva doesn't list churches as excluded, and churches and parishes do get approved. Canva makes the final call on every application.
Here's where churches get stuck. Canva checks applications through a verification partner called Goodstack, and in the U.S. that check works best when your church has its own 501(c)(3) recognition from the IRS. Churches are a special case:
- Churches are tax-exempt automatically. The IRS doesn't require them to apply, so many churches never got a determination letter.
- Many churches are covered by their denomination's group exemption. That's valid with the IRS, but some nonprofit programs only accept organizations with direct recognition.
- You have your own IRS determination letterApply. You're in good shape.
- You're under your denomination's group exemptionApply, and include proof of your affiliation.
- You've never applied with the IRSApply with your EIN letter and bylaws, and have a backup plan.
How to apply for Canva for Nonprofits as a church
- Use a church account, not a personal one. Sign in to Canva with a church email address, like office@yourchurch.org. If someone leaves, the account and every design stay with the church.
- Gather your documents first. Have these ready as PDFs: your IRS determination letter if you have one, your EIN assignment letter (the CP 575 the IRS sent when you got your tax ID), and your bylaws or constitution.
- Start the application. Go to canva.com/nonprofits, or in Canva open Settings, then Billing, and choose "Upgrade to Canva for Nonprofits."
- Use your church's legal name. Search for it exactly as it appears on your IRS paperwork, not the name on your sign.
- Show that you work there. Canva says a signed letter of affiliation or a staff ID with your name, role, and church helps. A short letter on church letterhead from your pastor works well.
- Watch your email. Canva says most applications are reviewed within 72 hours. Checking your connection to the church can take longer.
What to do if Canva turns down your church
Don't give up after the first email. Here are your options, roughly from easiest to most involved:
- Reply with more documents. Use the contact link in the decision email and send your EIN letter, bylaws, and a letter from your pastor. A person may review it.
- Ask your denomination. If you're under a group exemption, ask your denomination's office for a letter confirming your church is included, with their group exemption number.
- Get your own IRS letter. A church can ask the IRS for recognition by filing Form 1023. The IRS fee is $600, and churches can't use the shorter, cheaper 1023-EZ. It takes some paperwork, but the letter also opens doors to other nonprofit programs and reassures some donors. Talk with your accountant first.
- Pay for Canva. If none of that works, a paid Canva Pro or Teams plan gives you the same tools.
How to set up Canva for your church team
Not sure what your volunteers should design first? The 2-minute church communication quiz shows where your church's communication needs the most help.
- Add your Brand Kit first. Logos, colors, and fonts, so every slide and post matches.
- Turn your weekly designs into brand templates. Sunday slides, social posts, and bulletins. Lock the parts that shouldn't change.
- Invite your volunteers. You have up to 50 seats. Give each person their own login instead of sharing a password.
- Make folders by ministry. Kids, students, worship, events. People find things faster, and old designs don't get lost.
- Keep two admins. Make a second staff member an owner, so nobody gets locked out.
Common questions
Is Canva Pro free for churches?
It can be. Canva for Nonprofits gives Canva Pro features to one team of up to 50 people at no cost. Churches can apply, but Canva has to verify your nonprofit status, which usually means showing your church's own IRS 501(c)(3) recognition.
How many people can use Canva for Nonprofits?
One team of up to 50 members is free. Canva offers extra seats at 50% off its Enterprise pricing.
How long does approval take?
Canva says applications are usually reviewed within 72 hours, though verifying your connection to the organization can take longer.
What if our church doesn't have an IRS determination letter?

Not always. Many templates work on a free Canva account. Pro adds features churches use often, such as a Brand Kit, brand templates that volunteers can't accidentally break, transparent downloads, and premium photos and graphics.
Want templates your volunteers can actually use?
My Starter Kit gives your church a brand kit and editable templates for slides, social posts, and bulletins, built in your church's own Canva account. Your volunteers change the words, and everything still looks like your church.
